Kentucky State Police Post 9 Investigates Single Vehicle Fatal Collision in Floyd County

EASTERN, Ky. (August 31, 2026) – Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville was notified by Prestonsburg 911 of a single vehicle collision at approximately 1:53 p.m. on August 29, 2026. The collision occurred on Kentucky Route 680 in the Eastern community of Floyd County.

The preliminary investigation indicates that 48-year-old Christopher Smith of McDowell was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southbound on Kentucky Route 680 when the vehicle exited the roadway and overturned.

Mr. Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

The collision remains under investigation by Trooper Michael McKinney. Trooper McKinney was assisted at the scene by personnel from KSP Post 9 and local first responder agencies.
