Fatal Collision Involving ATV in Owen County Within the Monterey Community  

Air Methods was dispatched to the scene and transported the female passenger to the UK Hospital

Monterey, Ky. (June 22, 2019)  On June 21, 2019, at approximately 4:32 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 5 dispatch receive a 911 call in reference to an injury accident involving an ATV on the roadway within the Monterey Community.  The collision occurred on Old Landing Road.  A female passenger was reported to have been severely injured during the single vehicle collision, according to the caller.  Air Methods was dispatched to the scene and transported the female passenger to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment of her severe injuries.

 

An Owen County Deputy was also dispatched to scene to investigate the collision. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with the caller and operator of the ATV.  The deputy determined the operator of the ATV to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and arrested the male operator.  The accused was identified as Mario Chavez-Canela, 43, of Monterey, KY.  Chavez Canela was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs/Etc. 2nd Offense and Assault 2nd Degree.

 

Post 5 Dispatch was later notified that the female passenger had expired at the hospital due to her injuries sustained in the collision.  The passenger was identified as Patricia Karsner, 73, of Owenton, KY.  The Fayette County Deputy Coroner determined the time of death to be 8:09 p.m.  Next of kin has been notified.  An autopsy of the victim is scheduled for this date in Frankfort.

 

The Owen County Sheriff’s Office requested the Kentucky State Police assume control of the now fatal collision investigation. An accident reconstruction is being performed by KSP with the investigation pending.

 

The Kentucky State Police was assisted on scene and during the investigation by the Owen County Sheriff’s Office, Air Methods, Owen County EMS and the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.  The investigation is currently ongoing.
