Kentucky State Police Post 5 Promotes Safe Holiday Travel During Christmas and New Year’s Season

Campbellsburg, Ky. (December 19, 2025) — As Christmas celebrations and New Year’s festivities approach, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 5 is urging motorists to make safe and sober driving a priority throughout the holiday season. With increased travel, winter weather, and holiday gatherings, roadways across the commonwealth often see higher traffic volumes and an increased risk of crashes.

To enhance roadway safety, KSP Post 5 will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) from December 19 through January 1. This national traffic safety initiative, coordinated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, focuses on reducing crashes through high-visibility patrols aimed at detecting impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving behaviors.

KSP encourages drivers to follow these holiday travel safety reminders:

  • Celebrate Responsibly: If alcohol or other impairing substances are part of your plans, arrange transportation ahead of time. A safe ride is always the best gift you can give yourself and others.
  • Slow Down for Conditions: Winter weather, reduced daylight and holiday traffic can change driving conditions quickly. Adjust your speed and increase following distance.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid distractions behind the wheel. Put phones away and remain alert, especially in high-traffic areas and late-night hours.
  • Speak Up: If you encounter a driver who appears impaired or dangerous, contact your local KSP Post or law enforcement agency.

KSP reminds all motorists that safe driving decisions help ensure every seat at the table is filled this holiday season. Through awareness, enforcement and responsible choices, we can work together to make Kentucky’s roads safer from Christmas through New Year’s Day.
