Kentucky State Police Investigates Three-Vehicle Injury Collision Involving Trooper in Jefferson County
VALLEY STATION, KY (April 29, 2026) – A Kentucky State Police (KSP) trooper was injured in a three-vehicle collision on Dixie Highway in Jefferson County. The collision occurred near the 15000 block of Dixie Highway, approximately four miles south of the Gene Snyder Freeway.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a Mitsubishi Mirage, operated by 33-year-old David Huggins of Louisville, was traveling southbound on Dixie Highway when the vehicle collided with a Ford Ranger pickup truck operated by 69-year-old Michael Nugent of Shepherdsville, which was also traveling southbound. The Ford Ranger then spun into the northbound lanes of Dixie Highway.
Trooper Lukas Jones, assigned to KSP Post 4, was operating a marked KSP cruiser and traveling northbound on Dixie Highway when his vehicle struck the passenger side of the Ford Ranger.
Following the collision, Huggins fled the scene, traveling southbound on Dixie Highway toward Radcliff. He was later located in Vine Grove and taken into custody.
Huggins has been charged with two counts of Assault 2nd Degree, Leaving the Scene of an Accident-Failure to Render Aid or Assistance, and DUI 1st Offense Aggravated Circumstances.
Trooper Jones was transported to Jewish Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. Nugent was transported by EMS to University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
KSP Post 4 troopers were assisted at the scene by the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department, the Louisville Metro Police Department, and the Vine Grove Police Department.
The investigation by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team remains ongoing.
