KSP Post 13 is investigating

Payne Gap, Ky. (May 17, 2018) – A two vehicle crash in the Payne Gap community of Letcher County has claimed the life of a Jessamine County man.  Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard responded to the collision scene on US 119 North just before 9:30 p.m. last night.  Jenkins Fire Department, Neon Police Department and Neon Ambulance Service provided assistance at the scene.

The initial investigation of this collision determined that Shelly I. Damron, age 36 of Ashcamp, KY, was traveling south on US 119 in a 2011 Ford Expedition.  The Expedition crossed the centerline and continued into the northbound lane where it collided with a 1993 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by 56 year old Craig D. Carter of Whitesburg.  Shelly Damron and Craig Carter were transported to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and were later released.  A passenger in the F-150 pickup, 32 year old Joshua Craig Carter of Nicholasville, KY was pronounced deceased at the scene by Letcher County Coroner Renee Campbell. Joshua Carter was the son of the driver, Craig Carter.

While this incident remains under investigation, no apparent contributing factors have been determined at this time.  Toxicology results from blood specimens given by both drivers, which are routinely obtained in fatal collision investigations, are pending.  Detective Brandon Thomas with KSP Post 13 is heading this investigation.
