Kentucky State Police Investigates a Two-Vehicle Fatal Collision

GEORGETOWN Ky. (July 11, 2026) – On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 3:01 PM, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office requested the Kentucky State Police (KSP) – Post 12 to take lead of an investigation of a double-fatality collision that involved a Scott County Fire Department vehicle and a passenger vehicle. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that the Scott County Fire Department had responded to an unrelated collision on the left shoulder of I-75 south near the 142-mile marker. While providing traffic control on the left emergency shoulder, another vehicle traveling south on I-75 lost control and collided with the parked Scott County Fire Department truck. The Scott County Fire Department vehicle had emergency lights activated and was occupied by fire fighters.

As a result of the collision, three Scott County fire fighters were transported to Centerpoint Health Hospital, in Georgetown, where they were treated for injuries and later released. The passenger vehicle had four occupants, two of which were transported to UK Hospital for serious injuries. Darren P. Nelson, 61, and Shauna C. Nelson, 62, of Knoxville, TN were pronounced deceased by the Scott County Coroner at the scene of the collision.

The collision remains under investigation by Sgt. Jack Hedges U/214 of the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). CIRT was assisted by Scott County EMS, Scott County Fire Department, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Scott County Coroner’s Office and Emergency Management. CIRT was also assisted by other KSP Post 12 personnel.
