SMITHLAND, KY.(March 24, 2017) – On Sunday, September 9, 1984, at approximately 11:20 p.m., Livingston County Deputy Sheriff Carnie Hopkins notified his dispatch he would be checking on a hitchhiker at the intersection of US 60 and KY 137, just east of Smithland, Kentucky.
The intersection where this occurred is also known as “The Monument”. A short time later, Deputy Hopkins was found murdered at this location. Deputy Hopkins had obviously been in a struggle with his assailant(s) and died as a result of a gunshot wound.
KSP Detective Cory Hamby is actively investigating new leads received within the last week. No arrests have been made in this case, and the Kentucky State Police is seeking assistance from the public.
