Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement to Participate in Operation Safe Driver Week
HENDERSON , Ky. (July 13, 2026) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Division is joining law enforcement and safety agencies across the country for Operation Safe Driver Week, from July 12-18. This national initiative from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) aims to improve driver behavior and reduce crashes through enforcement, inspections, education and outreach.
Throughout the week, KSP CVE officers and inspectors will focus on identifying and stopping commercial motor vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors. These include, but are not limited to, speeding, distracted driving, improper lane changes and failure to wear seat belts. Officer Michael Smith, West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Spokesperson, explains why this initiative is important
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, including those who drive commercial vehicles,” said Ofc. Smith. “Operation Safe Driver Week allows us to not only promote public safety through ensuring that everyone is following the rules of the road, but also to provide education and meaningful interactions with drivers across the state.” Data from the CVSA shows that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement help reduce problematic driving behaviors. By contacting drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel aim to make our roadways safer by targeting high-risk driving behaviors.
KSP reminds all drivers to practice these safe driving behaviors:
* Slow Down – Speeding is among the top factors of fatal crashes. Following the speed limit could save a life.
* Give Trucks Ample Space – Large vehicles require extra stopping distance. Avoid cutting them off when merging or changing lanes.
* Buckle Up – Seat belts save thousands of lives each year. In Kentucky, wearing a seatbelt is required by law.
* Report Unsafe Drivers – If you encounter a reckless driver, do not hesitate to report them to the closest KSP Post or local law enforcement. To find the KSP Post nearest you, visit the agency’s website.
In addition to enforcement, this annual event also serves as an educational opportunity, raising awareness among commercial vehicle operators and the general public about the importance of compliance with safety regulations. For more information about the CVE Division, visit KSP’s website.
