Hazardous Devices Investigator

The Kentucky State Police Hazardous Devices Investigator II has an important role in one of the most elite state police agencies in the United States. Hazardous Devices Investigator are dedicated team members responsible for investigating explosive complaints, suspected explosive devices and explosives related offenses.

Hazardous Devices Investigators coordinate Kentucky State Police activities involving training law enforcement and fire departments in explosive operations as well as renders safe explosive devices, recover explosives and disposal of these items as required. Other tasks include preparing detailed reports of explosives and hazardous devices investigations, operating specialized tools/equipment and conducting disposal operations. Investigators are on call and perform other duties as required.

Hazardous Devices Investigator are paid and receive benefits from day one of employment. All equipment and agency clothing are issued.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess at least five (5) years of experience involving explosives or hazardous devices used in the areas of law enforcement, the military, or firefighting;
  • A citizen of the United States.
  • Of good moral character and in good health.
  • Not less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license against which no more than six (6) driver demerit points have been assessed.  You must submit a copy of a valid driver’s license at time of application.
  • At the time of application, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and three years of full-time work experience, or sixty (60) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university, or be a high school graduate with at least two (2) years of active military duty or two (2) years of experience as a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer.

Applicants shall be disqualified from further participation in the selection process or removed from the register if it is determined that:

  • An applicant does not meet any one (1) of the qualifications for appointment as a sworn officer.
  • An applicant had made a false statement of material fact on the application or in response to any questions or requests for information during the selection process.
  • An applicant has used or attempted to use political influence, coercion or bribery to secure an advantage in any phase of the selection process.
  • An applicant has cheated during the course of any examination required during the selection process or has attempted to gain an advantage over other applicants by any dishonest or intentionally misleading act or omission.
  • An applicant has failed to comply with any instructions for the agency relating to the selection process.
  • An applicant has been dismissed for cause from any public agency or has resigned while charges of misconduct were pending.
  • An applicant has been convicted of a felony or a crime or moral turpitude.
  • An applicant is a current user of a controlled substance, unless prescribed by a physician.
  • An applicant is addicted to any controlled substance or intoxicant.
  • An applicant has more than six (6) driver demerit points against his/her operator’s license.
  • An applicant tests positive for an unlawful controlled substance as determined by a blood or urine analysis.
  • An applicant has tattoos that can be seen when wearing the Kentucky State Police Facilities Security winter uniform shirt.
  • Typical work schedule may include first, second, or third shift assignments as well as weekends and holidays.
  • Due to the nature of the profession, schedules may change to meet the needs of the branch to ensure the protection of life and property. Hazardous Investigators may be subject to high stress environments.
  • Certified Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS)
  • Graduate of FBI Hazardous Devices School (HDS)
  • Agency policy requires that tattoos or body piercings shall not be visible while in any agency issued uniform. Long sleeved training shirts and winter uniform shirts may be issued to applicants with visible tattoos from the elbow to the wrist.

Hazardous Devices Investigator Benefits

Hazardous Devices Investigator will receive a salary of $73,555.20 annually. Additionally, they will receive a training stipend, per diem, and clothing allowance.

Health Insurance: May choose one of a variety of health insurance plans offered with dependent coverage at additional charge.

Life Insurance: The Commonwealth of Kentucky provides a $20,000 term life insurance policy.

Vacation: Paid vacation time is accrued according to years of service.

Sick Leave: You accrue one sick day for every month worked. You can accumulate up to one (1) year of sick time.

Military Leave: Any member of the military reserve or National Guard is entitled to a maximum of 21 working days per year of paid military leave.

Holidays: 11-1/2 paid holidays per year. (12-1/2 in years if there is a presidential election.)

Application Process

Interview

Each interview shall be conducted using the same guidelines for all eligible applicants. A three-person board conducts the interview and scores the applicant based on his/her responses. Selected scores, based on departmental needs, will continue to a polygraph examination.

Background Check

All applicants who achieve appropriate scores on the interview shall be required to complete an extensive background investigation. Background investigations are conducted on applicants after polygraph testing has been completed

Offers of Employment Given

Applicants recommended for employment will receive a Conditional Offer of Employment, pending medical and psychological examinations.
