- Possess at least five (5) years of experience involving explosives or hazardous devices used in the areas of law enforcement, the military, or firefighting;
- A citizen of the United States.
- Of good moral character and in good health.
- Not less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Possess a valid driver’s license against which no more than six (6) driver demerit points have been assessed. You must submit a copy of a valid driver’s license at time of application.
- At the time of application, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and three years of full-time work experience, or sixty (60) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university, or be a high school graduate with at least two (2) years of active military duty or two (2) years of experience as a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer.

Hazardous Devices Investigator
Job Description
Investigates explosive complaints, suspected explosive devices and explosives related offenses. Renders safe explosive devices, recover explosives and disposal of these items as required. Coordinates Kentucky State Police activities involving training law enforcement and fire departments in explosive operations. Prepares detailed reports of explosives and hazardous devices investigations. Operates specialized tools/equipment and conducts disposal operations. Investigators are on call and performs other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Certified Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS)
- Graduate of FBI Hazardous Devices School (HDS)
- 3 years experience as a FBI Certified Bomb Technician
Hazardous Devices Investigator Benefits
Hazardous Devices Investigator will receive a salary of $73,555.20 annually.
Investigators also receive a $4,429.00 annual training stipend (effective August 1, 2016).

Life Insurance: The Commonwealth of Kentucky provides a $20,000 term life insurance policy.
Vacation: Paid vacation time is accrued according to years of service.
Sick Leave: You accrue one sick day for every month worked. You can accumulate up to one (1) year of sick time.
Military Leave: Any investigator who is a member of the military reserve or National Guard is entitled to a maximum of 21 working days per year of paid military leave.
Application Process
Interview
Each interview shall be conducted using the same guidelines for all eligible applicants. A three-person board conducts the interview and scores the applicant based on his/her responses. Selected scores, based on departmental needs, will continue to a polygraph examination.
Physical Standards Test (PST)
The physical fitness test consisting of simulated essential job tasks, used to determine if candidates can perform the essential job tasks of a Hazardous Devices Investigator.
Polygraph Examination
This examination is the beginning of the background investigation. All applicants who successfully complete the aptitude and achieve appropriate scores on the physical testing and interview shall be required to complete an extensive background investigation.
Background Check
All applicants who achieve appropriate scores on the interview shall be required to complete an extensive background investigation. Background investigations are conducted on applicants after polygraph testing has been completed
Offers of Employment Given
Applicants recommended for employment will receive a Conditional Offer of Employment, pending medical and psychological examinations.
